A Memoir
Andrea Werhun’s sex work career gives her money, freedom, joy, and a lot of dick. An intellectually curious university student, she revels in the opportunity to invent 'Mary Ann,' her escort counterpart, and introduce her to men all over the city. She whores, she learns, she writes it all down, and then, as per a signed agreement promising her Catholic mother she'll retire by age 24, she quits. To become a stripper.
This new, engorged edition of the sold-out memoir-cum-art book features 100 full-color photographs by Nicole Bazuin. In image and text, Modern Whore explores the many identities sex workers adopt in the service of their clients and in the eyes of the public–in both a literal and literary way. But Andrea doesn’t shy away from the serious side of sex work, either, exploring the risks sex workers take and the rights our culture is constantly taking away from them.

I'm eternally astonished by the number of nominally progressive people I know that might say they support sex workers, but still don't apply the "nothing about us, without us" line of thinking when stating their opinions on the matter. People are so often quick to leap to assumptions and accept whatever point of view most aligns with their preconceived notions regardless of whether or not that point of view comes from anyone with any direct affiliations with the work. It is one thing to state allegiance with sex workers in the arbitrary because you sense it's what you're supposed to say, it's quite another to understand the importance in actually listening to the wide array of voices in a highly stigmatized and misunderstood trade.
That's extra bizarre to me when learning about the experiences of sex work can take the form of reading a book as enjoyable as this one. This is frequently laugh out loud funny, enormously creative tome that stimulates all manner of thought and feeling, and I can't recommend it highly enough. In fact I lent my copy to about 4 friends now, and every single one of them loved it. Andrea's honesty is unmatched and her pen game shines in every sentence making for a book you'll burn through before you know it and find yourself hungry for what comes next.
Eagerly anticipating the Sean Baker produced film to come!
This book tries just a bit too hard, and I found the photos cringy. I think the author has potential as a writer but isn’t quite there yet. It’s a bit interesting.
